The Power of Creative Repositioning

The Power of Creative Repositioning

Sometimes it’s important to take a step back and reevaluate what you’re doing and where you’re heading. Things might not be going as well as hoped, it may not be as enjoyable anymore, or it could be sending you down the wrong path. These things happen, and that’s okay, but it’s never too late for a little course correction to get you going strong again. The way that you respond to the journey will determine your destination. You might even be surprised by how much of a difference a diversion from the road you once knew can make - I know I definitely have been.

In 2017 I’ve made the decision to take my writing in a new direction. Towards the end of last year, I let it fall behind everything else and to be honest with you, I didn’t really know what to do with it anymore. As I looked back on 2016, I began to realise the reason that I had been holding back from writing. Up until now, my words had been all about my life as a design student, what I learnt, how I felt and the things that helped me along the way. It clicked that now, I’m not a design student anymore, so it doesn’t feel right to be writing every week as if I am. I do still have plenty of things to say about university, studying in general, and learning about design, but I would feel like a bit of an imposter, or someone who just can’t let go if I kept attempting to write everything about that one aspect of my life that isn’t part of who I am anymore. Therefore, in light of this realisation, I decided to do some repositioning.

This year, my plan is to focus more on writing about design in a more thoughtful, relevant and helpful way about topics that are pertinent to me at this new stage of my life. I’m still going to be sharing my experiences, however, since my experiences aren’t at design school anymore, my writing will reflect this. I might throw in some anecdotes from the past, or do an article or two about being a student if I feel it weighing on my mind, but it just won’t be the focus anymore. I plan to produce practical articles that will allow me to get my thoughts onto paper while also providing you with real-life tips, advice and thought-provoking ideas that will hopefully help you too! In general, I’m just trying to get a little bit more passionate and write about things that actually stir my soul and challenge my mind when it comes to design. I lost this towards the end of 2016, but I’m back with some big plans and I’m genuinely so excited to write now.

This decision has given my writing a new lease on life. A sudden realisation led to a small chain of thoughts which resulted in some big changes for the better. If you, like I was, are feeling lost, a little stranded or without much passion for what you’re doing, the answer may lie in a bit of repositioning. Take a look at your creative venture, think about what might need to shift, change or adapt, and follow that path. You may need to target a different audience, try a new technique or attempt a completely new subject matter. It may not be that straightforward; it might even be more simple than that, but any change that could potentially increase your positivity, passion or productivity is a step in the right direction.
