June & July Favourites
So in my last favourites post, I was talking to you guys about how I had been finding it difficult to find new things that I really loved and wanted to share with you, so I’m going to try something new and slightly different. Hear me out, and go with me here - I know that change can be difficult, but we can get through it! So from here, I’m going to try structure these posts into categories, and each month I’ll share my favourite thing from each category with you! I’m including some things that aren’t necessarily directly design or art related, but you might enjoy alongside your creative adventures! Let’s give it a go!
BE PRODUCTIVE - Sip
I recently discovered this app and it has changed my world. Basically, Sip is a little powerhouse which sits neatly tucked away in your menu bar and stores colours. Simply click on the picker, hover over anything on your screen and select the colour. The hex code is copied to your clipboard, so you can paste between programmes, and the colour is stored for later. You can change colour modes depending on what you’re working on, and come back later to find the colours that you used in the past! There's also an iPhone app which has an amazing tool for creating colour palettes! Such a handy little tool that is making my life so much easier! Download it here, give it a try and see for yourself!
COLOUR - #EDAE5F
Speaking of colours, I thought I would try to inspire you with my favourite colour of each month! This month I’ve been working on some freelance work and through exploring colour options on that project I’ve become obsessed with this kind of burnt yellow colour! It’s so warm and almost mustardy - I just love it! When I used Sip on this colour, it called it “Porsche”, and while I don’t really know where that came from, I’m just gonna roll with it! The hex code is #EDAE5F if you wanted to try it out for yourself!
TYPE - Pier Sans
I’m a fan of geometric typefaces in general, but lately even more so. One geometric typeface that I keep going back to lately has been Pier Sans. Pier is a sans serif typeface which you can download for free for personal projects here. The family includes regular, italic, bold, and bold italic fonts, which give you a few options in terms of design and they all look great in both small and large point sizes. I just love the round shapes of the characters and the modern feel of the typeface as a whole!
WATCH - Gilmore Girls
Now, this is definitely not design related, but I’ll make it relevant, don’t worry! Sometimes your brain might need a break from your heavy study session to watch some easy-watching TV, or perhaps you work well with something going in the background. Whatever the situation might be, I can recommend Gilmore Girls to fill that need. I used to watch Gilmore Girls when I was younger but couldn’t really remember what happened, other than the fact that I loved it, so I decided to watch it from the beginning again. If you just need some light watching to give you a good laugh and some classic small-town drama to keep you entertained, this show is perfect. I have just finished all of the old seasons and am now waiting for the new revival season to come out soon! It’s all available on Netflix so it’s easy as pie to watch too!
READ - Binge
I bought this book at the start of the year but never got around to finishing it. I’ve recently started trying to read before I go to sleep instead of browsing things on my phone, so this gave me the perfect excuse to finally make my way through to the end. Now I have been watching Tyler Oakley’s YouTube videos for a while since I’m obsessed with YouTube, so I knew I would probably like it anyway, but I think that even if you don’t know who he is, it’s still a great read. Tyler’s life is in the spotlight so it’s interesting to read how he got to that point, all the hard work he has put in, and how he deals with it all now. If you’re at all interested in internet celebrities, social media, YouTube or anything related to those things, I think you’ll love this book! It also has so many hilarious anecdotes from Tyler’s life so it’s an amazing mood-booster and great easy-reading!
LISTEN - Heroine
No, I’m not talking about anything related to Lorde, but I’m actually talking about a new podcast I’ve found! Heroine is a podcast about women’s creative leadership, confidence and wisdom. I discovered this through watching a video featuring the show’s host, Maria Molfino, talk about how creative confidence can help you embrace risk. I’m researching similar topics for my project at uni so I was immediately interested, and I was led to this podcast. I haven’t listened to it all yet, but there are 16 episodes covering topics from creative confidence, to comparison, perfectionism and risk, among others! Give it a listen and let me know what you think! I’d love to talk about these topics and what you think about them too!
That’s all the favourites for this time! If any of them sound interesting or helpful, give them a go and let me know what you think! And as always, I’d love to hear what you’ve been loving lately too!
Much Love, Hollie! :D
