22 Life Lessons from 22 Years of Life!
Yesterday I turned the ripe old age of 22 and I’m feeling like a real life adult now that I’ve passed the major milestone ages of 18 and 21. To mark the big day, I thought I’d share with you something that I’ve learnt for each year of my existence! I may only be a small portion of the way through life but I might have a few gems to share so in no particular order, here we go!
You do you!
You only get one life so you’ve got to make the most of it! There’s no point wasting time doing things that don’t make you happy so figure out what brings you joy and spend more time doing those things with the people who make it the most fun!
Shout it out!
A lot of us put in heaps of effort to study, teach ourselves things, work hard and achieve great results. When those successes and great results come along, it’s totally okay to be proud of it and share it with others! You worked hard and you deserve to shout it from the rooftops!
Work smarter, not harder!
Working harder is not efficient. It will often burn you out and make you start to resent the things that you love. Instead figure out some tactics that work for you to make things more productive instead. Still work hard, but in productive amounts of time that allow you to spend time relaxing and hanging out with friends and family.
Just keep learning! Just keep learning!
No matter how much you’re taught at university or when you’re learning things in your own time, there’s always room to keep growing. Whether you learn something completely new, or improve your current skills, keep your brain and your creativity active by continuing to learn new things!
Support your squad!
Especially in a creative environment, there are often so many talented people around you doing the most amazing things. Get around them, support them and encourage them about what they’re doing. It will not only help them along but you can also learn from them and be inspired by having a great bunch of creative people around you.
On the other hand, there are probably people around you doing just that, encouraging, motivating and inspiring you. Never take that for granted. They don’t have to do that, so take note, be thankful and don’t be afraid to actually say thank you every so often!
If you’re like me and you don’t live at home anymore, it’s important to remember the people who helped you get to this point! Your family, whether that’s your Mum, Dad, Siblings, close friends or whoever, don’t forget to catch up every once in a while to keep them up to date with what you’re up to and see what they’re doing too! Things always get busy, but setting some time aside to go home, or have a skype call or even a quick text message, can go a long way!
Grow from your mistakes!
We’re all human, and unfortunately mistakes get made. Nobody is perfect and that’s okay, but the way that you react to these things will make all the difference. Acknowledge what went wrong, pick yourself up, evaluate what you could’ve done better and grow from it. You’ll come out better on the other side.
Often we’ll get into some things that we think could be a good idea but turn out not being right for us. It’s 100% okay to make the decision that you’re not on the right path and go in a different direction. You can always figure out a way to do something else, even if it’s a bit difficult at the time, and it’ll be worth it in the end when you’re doing what makes you happy!
While it’s important to do the things that make you happy, it’s also vital to surround yourself with people who do that too. You should be encouraged, inspired, motivated and made happy by the people around you, so ensure that when you’re taking time out to spend time with people, they’re bringing the positive vibes! It’s not worth having people bringing you down!
Fill your life with creativity!
People are one part of the puzzle, but it’s also important to fill your environment with things that motivate and inspire you. Whether that’s quotes that you read out to yourself, posters on the wall, images on your computer desktop, or going to creative events, fill your life with creativity and you’ll be full of inspiration!
Try different things!
In order to figure out what you really love to do, you have to try different things! It’s never too late to try something new and if you decide that you like a selection of different things, that’s okay too! You don’t have to just do one thing, you can do whatever you like to do! You might do one thing a lot and then have a couple of other things on the side, or do a few things equally as much. Whatever it is, have fun and don’t feel restricted by what you tried first!
Grades aren't everything!
At college or university, it’s sometimes made to feel like you’re not succeeding if you don’t get A+ every time, but that’s a load of rubbish. Yes, it always feels good to get top grades but that’s not everything. If you can get an A+ but don’t know how to talk to a client, you might not get very far. Or on the other hand, you might be a B+ student and have incredible people skills and do really well! So don’t worry too much about your grades, just do the best that you can and work on the skills that you’ll need to develop your career in the direction you want to go!
Take advantage of opportunities!
Like I said earlier, you only get one life so make the most of it! Go to events, meet new people and do all the work that you can do! Have fun with it and don’t be shy. I’m an introvert so I find this difficult but every time I’ve put myself out there it’s been more than worth it and I never regretted it, so go for it!
Get yourself out there into the world!
One of the things that you can do to bring more of those opportunities knocking at your door is to get yourself out there! Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself to new people or put your work out there on social media. Do what you can to get people to know your name and see what happens!
You're never too young!
When you are putting yourself out there, be careful not to sell yourself short or hold yourself back because you think you’re too young or because other people say you are. You’re never too young! If you’re passionate and work hard, you can do anything, no matter how old you are. Age is just a number so go for it!
You're never too old either!
Equally, you’re never too old! Don’t worry that it’s too late to start chasing your dream or that you’ve missed the boat on something. Just make the leap and get in there! Again, age is just a number so if you can show passion and initiative, you’ll go far!
Live in the moment!
Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in the busyness of life and forget to appreciate what’s happening right now. When you’re feeling like life is speeding by or you’re getting overwhelmed, take a step back and take note of the amazing things happening right now! Yes, you can work hard and look towards the future, but you should be enjoying it too!
While you live in the moment, it can also be great to make some goals for the future to work towards! Having big dreams can motivate and encourage you to keep going and work hard. It’s also great to see your dreams move closer and closer and eventually start ticking things off the list!
Cornflakes are an appropriate dinner sometimes...
Cornflakes for dinner are my version of fast food for other people. When you work hard it’s okay to treat yourself and give yourself a break every so often! Whether that for you means a quick fast food dinner, or a movie date with a friend, or if you’re like me and you just want to eat breakfast for dinner, go for it! Obviously you might not, and you probably shouldn’t do that everyday because it might not be the healthiest, but once in a while, I say do it!
Make things that you want to make!
When you do something creative for your job, it can sometimes take the fun out of being creative so make sure that in your spare time or even in your job, you start making things that you want to make! You’re not going to do as great a job if you’re not passionate about what you’re creating so this should be super high on your priorities in order to create incredible results!
All in all, have fun! Whatever your career or hobbies might be, make sure that you’re enjoying yourself! If that means making some changes or heading in a different direction, make it happen! Having fun and being happy with what you’re doing in your life is paramount, so do what you can to get to that point!
Those are a few things that I’ve learnt along the way so far, and I hope that they encourage you in your careers, creativity and in life in general!
Much Love, Hollie! :D
