I’m not going to lie to you, I find these favourites posts really difficult and I think it gets harder each month! I don’t really buy many new things, and when I do it’s usually practical things like food, paper to print my uni projects on, or replacing things that have broken, stuff like that. I do, however get to try new creative practices and different ways of working, so I’m going to share some of those with you today, as well as one or two new items! Enjoy!
Donut touch my camera!
One day a couple of weeks ago I was having a particularly bad day where everything had just gone wrong and I was so grumpy. I was frustrated and basically wanted to curl up in a ball for the rest of the year. Luckily I have a marvellous boyfriend, Sam, who surprised me right on time with a cute new lens cap for my camera! I vlog with this camera which means I basically take it everywhere with me, so this new lens cap is great at helping me recognise my camera and grab it quickly when I’m on the way out. It also just makes my camera a bit more exciting, a little cuter, and a whole lot yummier! Sam got this from Photojojo, and there’s a burger option too!
Wait, is she painting words on stage right now?!
One of my May favourites actually only happened yesterday! For the first time ever, I did some live lettering on Sunday morning! Now I love lettering so much, but I am by no means the best at it. I’m ok, but there are a million and one different ways that I can improve so I was quite nervous about doing something I’m already not 100% sure about in large scale in front of lots of other people! The good thing is that I did this for the first time at my church, so it was a nice, comfortable environment to give it a go for the first time! We had an encounter service yesterday which is a more relaxed, worship-filled service with lots of creative things happening to encourage different ways of encountering God. We made a beautiful video which was played while a spoken word was performed. I then created a lettering piece live of a part of the spoken word while the worship continued. At first I was shaking like a leaf, but as I got into it, sang along with the worship and figured out my rhythm, it was actually pretty fun! I really enjoyed the experience and I’d love to do more large-scale lettering pieces in the future, even if they’re not live!
Press those letters!
Speaking of lettering, I’ve been loving letterpress even more than usual lately! I think it’s probably because for once, my work is going to plan and turning out okay, but whatever the reason, I love it! I’m not very good at letterpress to be honest with you, because I’m not a very hands-on, making things kind of person, so it takes a lot of effort for me to get my hands dirty, but when I do, it’s great! I’m also not a very abstract person, so I find it difficult to be expressive with my work, so I just figured out a way to incorporate my minimalist, graphic design style into it and now I’m getting into the groove of things! I just love the history of the practice, and all the little things that you learn along the way when trying new ways of doing things. I also hate mess in all other areas of life, so it becomes a bit of a release for me to throw some ink around and see what happens! The fact that it’s typography also helps because I’m a bit of a type nerd! Anyway, if you get the chance to give letterpress or printmaking a go, I would 100% recommend it, even if you’re a bit unsure and you don’t think it will be your thing. Try it out and let me know what you think!
Headphones = happiness!
When I’ve been doing my letterpress work, or getting stuck into some interpretive typography, my favourite thing this month has been turning up my music and having a bit of a one man party. I’ve been extra introverted this month since there’s been so much to get done and when I haven’t been working, I’ve been wanting to do my own thing, so headphones and loud music have become my best friend. Not only does it block out all the other distractions, but it also puts me in a fun, productive mood so I can get stuff done! Some of my favourites to boogie to this month have been The Story So Far, The Pitch Perfect Soundtrack, Childish Gambino and Troye Sivan - an eclectic mix, I know; I have super random music taste that changes basically every day!
Everyday I’m folding paper!
My most recent purchase was a bone folder which is a thin paper folding tool made from bone. It’s used in book binding, origami, and basically anything that involves folding paper in some way. I have wanted one of these for ages now, and I finally got my hands on one! I just want to go out and fold all the paper I can find with beautiful, clean lines! I’m so weird, I know. Just trust me, it’s great!
Those have been my favourite things this month, and I can’t wait to see what next month brings! It’s actually my birthday in June so who knows, there might be some new things to fall in love with! Let me know what your favourite things have been too, I’d love to hear as always!
Much love, Hollie! :D
